Guy Ritchie Is Returning To His Crime Roots With The Gentlemen, And I Am Pumped

In recent years, Guy Ritchie has become a go-to director when studios are developing new brand products. It started back in 2009 when Sherlock Holmes became a surprise success, and since then all of his features have been based on pre-existing properties – including Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, and the upcoming Aladdin.

At the same time, though, there are still plenty out there who continue to admire him for his early work in the crime genre, as he wouldn’t be where he is today without the cult popularity of titles like Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels, and Snatch. And while he hasn’t made a movie in that vein in more than a decade, that streak is soon coming to an end, as he’s returning to his roots with his new movie for STX Films: The Gentlemen.

Obviously we’re still waiting for Aladdin to be released (it’s scheduled for late May this year), but earlier today at CinemaCon in Las Vegas – the annual convention for theater owners – we got our very first look at The Gentlemen, and it definitely has us keyed up. The project has had a few different names as it’s moved through development, including Toff Guys and Bush, but regardless of what it’s called, what makes it really stand out is it’s absolutely fantastic ensemble cast playing bad people who do bad things to other bad people.

Admittedly it was a bit challenging to get a full read on the full plot of the movie, as it appears that there is a whole lot going on, but the footage did get across the basic idea. Charlie Hunnam, who played Guy Ritchie’s lead for King Arthur, is our protagonist, and a criminal who is stuck in a steadily escalating conflict between an eccentric, marijuana-specializing kingpin (Matthew McConaughey) and forces that want to see him pushed out – led by a character played by Henry Golding. Those three names alone create some serious expectations, but they’re joined in the insanity by Colin Farrell, Jeremy Strong, Eddie Marsan, Michele Dockery, and Hugh Grant (sporting an awesome cockney accent that is thousands of miles away from the posh inflections we typically hear from the actor).

This is the kind of filmmaking and storytelling that helped Guy Ritchie stand out when he was first making a name for himself in the late 1990s, and while one can’t really fault him for his more mainstream project choices recently, it’s exciting to see him pursue something like this. The fact that it’s totally original is obviously its own bonus, but what particularly stood out in the Gentlemen footage was the pitch-perfect dark comedy tone. Whether it was a dude doing a full sprint past his captors after being let out of a car trunk; or kids being chased for their cell phones after filming a man tripping and falling off a balcony, the preview gave the sense that Ritchie’s sharp, black-as-night sense of humor is just as strong now as it was nearly 20 years ago.

STX Entertainment acquired the film for distribution earlier this year, but sadly they have not yet announced a release date – which means that we are still in the dark as to when exactly it is coming out. That being said, production on The Gentlemen began last November and ended this past February, and it’s not exactly a movie that looks like it is stuffed to the gills with visual effects. If Guy Ritchie gets to put all of his attention towards it when he finishes promoting Aladdin, is it possible that we could see it come out some time before December? Right now we don’t know, but we will be keeping our fingers crossed, and we will keep you up to date with all of the latest information right here on CinemaBlend.

The horror genre is in a bit of a renaissance, with the last few years bringing new and exciting concepts to the theaters, ending up both critical and financial successes. Many of these latest hits come from Blumhouse, including movies like Get Out, Halloween, and Happy Death Day. The latter was irreverent and a sleeper hit, with a sequel quickly ordered by the horror studio, titled Happy Death Day 2U. Now check out its explosive new trailer, and get ready to jump back into the day from hell.

It looks like Happy Death Day 2U will continue pushing the boundaries of slasher genre, while also including plenty of its signature wit and comedy. And this time, it doesn't look like Tree is the only victim of the film's signature Groundhog Day-esque loop of death.

The above trailer starts out with oodles of exposition, for those who missed Happy Death Day or perhaps nodded off during a midnight showing. Tree (Jessica Rothe) relived the day of death over and over again, dying 11 times before finally figuring out who the killer was, and kicking her out of her life... literally. Now it seems that she's been living her happy ever after, until baby masks start popping back up, and she's promptly murdered once again.

Unfortunately, this resets the entire franchise, with Tree now once again waking up on the day of her death, having solved and fixed nothing. She must once again bring Carter and Samar up to speed, and die a handful of times while trying to sort it out. It looks like Samar is also a victim of the loop, which should complicated and expand the story quite a bit.

The trailer also recapped that Tree's roommate Lori was the killer, so her first instinct is likely to go find her and kick her out of a window again. But when Lori ends up murdered in the new loop, it's clear that there's a new killer around. This will allow for the same tropes to be used, while Happy Death Day 2U also goes new places with the burgeoning franchise.

Happy Death Day 2U will also give more explanations than the first movie did, likely giving an explanation of why Tree is involved in the time loop in the first place. This has the potential to turn the franchise into a modern classic, providing a new annual slasher film to enjoy. And with high concepts like time travel and self-awareness at play, it could be a horror property unlike anything we've seen before.

Happy Death Day 2U is directed by Christopher B. Landon, who also helmed the original film. He's got a long history with Blumhouse, having worked extensively on the Paranormal Activity franchise. Jason Blum is once again producing, further cementing the studio as a legendary house of horror.

Usually you can count on movies being released to select audiences before the general public can view them. Sometimes that just means that critics can check out said movies days or even weeks early, while other times it means attendees can see them at a film festival months beforehand. Quentin Tarantino’s latest flick, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, falls into the latter category, as it’s about to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.

Ahead of this screening, Quentin Tarantino has asked those who will see Once Upon a Time in Hollywood not to spoil anything about the movie afterwards. Here’s what his message said:

I love cinema, You love cinema. It’s the journey of discovering a story for the first time. The cast and crew have worked so hard to create something original, and I only ask that everyone avoids revealing anything that would prevent later audiences from experiencing the film in the same way.

Not spoiling a movie is just a matter of common decency, but I imagine it goes further than that for Quentin Tarantino. The script for his last movie, The Hateful Eight, leaked online in early 2014, and after that happened, Tarantino considered not making the movie at all and would publish it as a novel instead. Eventually he changed his mind and The Hateful Eight was filmed, released to the masses and earned numerous awards, but Tarantino, like a lot of filmmakers, is still concerned about spoilers getting out for other projects.

That brings us to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which is premiering at Cannes two months before the public gets to see it. That’s a lot of time for someone to be a buzzkill and post information about what happens in the movie online. So to help decrease the chances of that happening, the director used Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’s social media platforms, including Twitter, to politely ask that people at Cannes stay quiet about what they saw until everyone else gets to see it. That’s a reasonable request for any movie lover to honor, right?

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is arguably Quentin Tarantino’s most star-studded movie yet, with its main actors including Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie, and its supporting cast including Al Pacino, Bruce Dern, Lena Dunham, Mike Moh and the late Luke Perry. The movie is set in 1969 Los Angeles and follows an actor and his stuntman embarking to make a name for themselves in the film industry, all while the Manson Family is carrying out its illicit activities.

If you read Stephen King's original IT novel, then you know the story is massive, so much so that there's no way to effectively adapt it into one 120-150 minute-long movie. So Warner Bros and director Andy Muschietti wisely decided to split the horror tale into two parts, and last year's IT chronicled the Losers Club's first encounter with the eponymous demonic entity, a.k.a. Pennywise the Dancing Clown. Next year, the second portion of the King's 1986 horror tale will be adapted in IT: Chapter 2, and will see the now-adult protagonists returning to Derry, Maine. Over the last few weeks, the sequel's main cast has been coming together, and we've learned that Beauty and the Beast actor Jay Ryan has been cast to play the adult Ben Hanscom.

Ben Hanscom's younger self was played by Jeremy Ray Taylor in IT, and Deadline reports that Jay Ryan will be taking over as the character for IT: Chapter 2 (although the Losers Club members as children are expected to appear in the sequel via flashbacks). Ryan is arguably best known for playing Vincent Keller on the CW series Beauty and the Beast, while his other credits include Neighbours, Sea Patrol, Offspring and Terra Nova. He currently stars as Detective Ben Wesley on Mary Kills People.

In IT, Ben was the new kid in Derry, Maine, and he didn't start out having that many friends, leading to him spending a lot of his time reading and researching in the library. After being selected as bully Henry Bowers' newest target, Ben joined the Losers Club and joined them in investigating the unexplained tragedies and child disappearances that had plagued Derry for decades. Like Bill Denbrough, he had a crush on Beverly Marsh. In the IT novel, Ben grew up to be a successful architect and lost a lot of the weight that he'd gained as a kid. No spoilers here for those who haven't read the book, but it will be interesting to see how IT: Chapter 2's version of Ben as an adult differs from how he was depicted on the printed page, if at all.

With Jay Ryan aboard IT: Chapter 2, the sequel's cast now boasts Bill Skarsgard reprising Pennywise, Jessica Chastain as Beverly Marsh, James McAvoy as Bill Denbrough, Bill Hader as Richie Tozier, James Ransone as Eddie Kaspbrak and Andy Bean as Stanley Uris. That leaves Mike Hanlon, who was played by Chosen Jacobs in IT, as the only adult member of the Losers Club left to be cast in IT: Chapter 2. Andy Muschietti returned to helm the sequel, and Gary Dauberman wrote the script with Jeffrey Jurgensen.

This Rotten Week: Predicting Captive State, Five Feet Apart, And Wonder Park Reviews

After a week that saw Captain Marvel take over all of the movie headlines, we get three flicks with decidedly different themes. It’s a post-alien invasion world, sick teens, and an imaginary amusement park. Get ready for Captive State, Five Feet Apart, and Wonder Park.

Just remember, I'm not reviewing these movies, but rather predicting where they'll end up on the Tomatometer. Let's take a look at This Rotten Week has to offer.

We’ve seen a ton of alien invasion movies over the years. That genre isn’t wanting for coverage at all. But rarely do we see a movie that deals with the aftermath of an invasion - what the world (assuming it isn’t destroyed) looks like years after aliens colonize rather than annihilate. Such is the case with Captive State, a flick set a decade after an extraterrestrial takeover, with some characters complying, and other resisting.

Directed by Rupert Wyatt, who helmed The Gambler (44%), The Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes (82%) and The Escapist (66%), Captive State looks interesting, if a bit too spread out. From the trailer it seems to focus on a small patch of resistance fighters in Chicago while also trying to give us the full scope of a new alien-run world. It may have spread itself too thin. It looks intriguing and thought-provoking, but I suspect some of the machinations sour critics a little.

Hollywood just loves a story about a terminally sick kid falling in love. There’ve been a bunch of these over the years. Sometimes they stink like Midnight Sun (21%). But other times they are borderline great and the tears are preloaded, as in The Fault In Our Stars (80%), or Me, Earl And The Dying Girl (81%). Unfortunately, I think this latest, Justin Baldoni's Five Feet Apart, looks like it will fit in more with the first group.

Five Feet Apart centers on two teens with cystic fibrosis who fall in love despite having to spend their lives a certain distance (can you guess how far?) from others so as not to come in contact with any germs. I’m not dogging the central idea, but rather worry the execution doesn’t get all the way there. It looks very paint-by-numbers in its approach, and likely only appeals to a teen crowd. I don't expect the critics at-large to get on board.

Wonder Park is about a girl who, after a foray in the woods, enters the amusement park she'd imagined as a child. But the place has fallen into a state of disrepair and turmoil as her imagination dissolves with age. The story and premise look cute enough, but I can't help but feel like this flick is a poor man's Inside Out. It's not a 1-to-1 comparison, but I did feel like there are a lot of similarities in the premise - at least based on what the trailers show us.

Paramount Animation’s track record is less than stellar with three movies under their belt. The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water (80%), surprisingly, finished pretty high. But the other two, Monster Trucks (30%) and Sherlock Gnomes (27%), didn't fare so well with critics. Wonder Park looks cute enough, a play on the inner imagination come to life theme, but I suspect a re-used plot line plus some confusing elements in terms of the antagonists lead to a lower score.

We only had one movie come out last week, but it was a huge one, and I nailed the prediction for Captain Marvel (Predicted: 80% Actual: 79%). Give it a few more reviews trickling in over the course of the next week or so and this may end up being a direct hit. While some critics found some flaws, overall this was a critical and box office hit. Through 21 films, the average score in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is 84% and the median is 85%. That leaves this one, I suppose, below average when compared against its direct peers, but that’s splitting hairs really. The Importance Of A Good Prosthetic, According To Taraji P. Henson

Playing a figure in real life is a minefield of minute details. Everything from speech patterns to hand gestures, as well as wardrobe choices and physical appearance, can be studied and scrutinized in the name of turning yourself into another person. But even with all of that effort, it still isn’t an exact science. That is when the time honored tool of a good prosthetic suit comes in handy, and while playing The Best of Enemies’ civil rights hero Ann Atwater, actor Taraji P. Henson understood this specific point the best.

During CinemaBlend’s recent conversation with Taraji P. Henson, as part of The Best of Enemies’ promotional tour, the subject of just what it took for her to sink into character came up. And in discussing that point, it all came down to the physical transformation that Henson had to make in order to truly embody Atwater’s trademark movements and gestures.

In the effort to make this change as accurate as possible, the suit that Henson wore in the film needed to undergo some specific alterations. And those changes, as explained in our conversation, came down to the following physical attributes:

The boobs were small, and they were perky and pretty. And I was like, ‘That doesn’t match the woman.’ … When I put the suit on, it felt light. I felt like I was walking like myself, and I was like, ‘I need to walk differently, I can’t walk like Taraji. I need to be earthy, heavy, in the ground, you know?’ I said, ‘Call Tyler Perry, and ask him who made Madea’s boobs, because I need boobs like that.’ … My point is, they didn’t think I would be willing to go there, and I was like, ‘I have to. This is a real person. I would be doing her a disservice if I didn’t."

It’s that sort of dedication that’s been extremely significant in Taraji P. Henson’s evolution as an actor. In preparing for Proud Mary, Henson previously spoke to us about how she prepared to deal with a film that had more action than she was previously used to. That same dedication is what comes through in her description of how she got ready for The Best of Enemies, as everything from how Ann ate to how she walked was put on the table as qualities to be studied and mastered in her portrayal.

The end result was something that everyone on set, and especially Taraji P. Henson herself, noticed during the filming of The Best of Enemies. Even her own personal security detail, whom she hired after their work on Proud Mary, noted to her that she was a totally different person once she’d gotten into her full prosthetic suit. And thanks to her push for a more accurate design, Henson was able to proudly claim this special victory:

For me, every time I put the suit on. Every time I got suited up, and I put on that fat suit, I was Ann.

It doesn’t matter if it’s getting a prosthetic suit just right, adapting to intense stunt work or whatever other challenges she has faced in the various projects she’s been a part of, Taraji P. Henson has a process when it comes to digging into a role; and it’s a huge part of what makes her specific brand of acting so unique. Tthat process works like a charm, as it allowed her to truly dig into the personal story of Ann Atwater and C.P. Ellis’s friendship, which is at the very heart of The Best of Enemies.

No, Michael Keaton Isn’t Returning For Spider-Man: Far From Home

With Spider-Man: Far From Home being the first Marvel Cinematic Universe movie post Avengers: Endgame, a lot of secrets were being kept about the film to keep the big crossover event properly secret. Now that things are getting a bit relaxed on the spoiler front, we're getting some more detail about what is actually in the upcoming movie, as well as what's not in it, including an appearance by the Vulture.

For many, one of the highlights of Spider-Man: Homecoming was Michael Keaton's role as Adrian Toomes. He's generally viewed as one of the better MCU villains to date, and that film ended with Toomes knowing the secret of Spider-Man's identity. It seemed like the sort of thing that might factor into a sequel, and so the word that Michael Keaton would be back for the movie that came to be known as Spider-Man: Far From Home wasn't a huge surprise.

Except, it turns out, that's not the case. Director Jon Watts says that we won't see Michael Keaton in the new movie, nor will we see Laura Harrier, who played Liz, Peter's love interest, and Toomes daughter, in the first film. According to Watts...

Keaton is not in the movie. And Laura is not in the movie.

Jon Watts doesn't go into further detail with Fandango, so it's not clear why it was being reported that Michael Keaton would be returning a year ago and now that turns out not to be true. It's possible there were initial plans to have Adrian Toomes appear, but the script went through changes. It's also possible that somebody got a hold of a fake script, something MCU movies have been known to use in the past to prevent spoilers from leaking.

Back when it was reported that Keaton would be in the movie we knew very little about the project as a whole, and so the possibility that he would be returning was certainly there. Now that we know what the movie is about, with Peter Parker on a European vacation with classmates when some massive elemental monsters appear, it's hard to imagine how Keaton's character, in prison in New York as far as we know, would fit into the story.

There appears to be plenty going on already. Jake Gyllenhaal plays Mysterio, a character who is typically a Spider-Man villain, but appears to be a hero in the trailers. Of course, Mysterio is usually a fraud in the comics, so it remains to be seen if this is all on the level.

In addition to that, we have the information that a hole has been torn in between dimensions as part of the use of the Infinity Stones, allowing at least one person from an alternate reality to cross over.

While we may not see Michael Keaton return in Spider-Man: Far From Home the possibility of him returning in the future is always there. If the multiverse really is going to play a role in the future of the MCU, we could see multiple versions of Michael Keaton for all we know.
