MoviePass Unveils New Plan That Keeps Costs Down, But Makes Major Changes

MoviePass has been seriously struggling recently and in an attempt to stop the bleeding had announced a number of changes to the subscription service, including an increase in the monthly cost to $14.95 and the blacking out of major new releases for a period of two weeks. Today, in response to user outcry, MoviePass has announced a change to their changes. The movie ticket subscription service will now be keeping its monthly cost at $9.95, but will begin to limit users to seeing three movies a month for that price. For users who want to see more movies, a discount of up to $5 per ticket will be offered. According to MoviePass, only about 15% of users see more than three movies in a month, so the vast majority should be unaffected, but since that 15% had been a major financial issue for the service, MoviePass should remain sustainable going forward. As is true with any new company, we've evolved to accommodate what has become an unprecedented phenomenon. We are now creating a framework to provide the vast majority of subscribers with what they want most -- low cost, value, variety, and broad availability -- and to bring some moderation to the small number of subscribers who imposed undue cost on the system by viewing a disproportionately large number of movies. We believe this new plan is a way for us to move forward with stability and continue to revitalize an entrenched industry and return moviegoing to everyone's financial reach.

From the day that MoviePass dropped its monthly subscription price to $9.95 a month a lot of people were curious. Considering that even a single movie ticket costs more than that in many markets, it didn't seem feasible that users could see one movie a day and allow MoviePass to survive. It's now clear that it wasn't feasible at all.

In addition to keeping the price point the same, but reducing the number of movies one can see in a month, MoviePass also announced it is ending its peak pricing policy, which saw a surcharge added on top of some screenings if they were deemed too popular, and the company also says that "many major studio first-run films" will be offered, implying that the two-week blackout will also be ending in most cases, though the use of the word "many" rather than "all" makes it sound like it may not be gone entirely.

If it's true that 85% of MoviePass users don't see more than three movies in a month, then the vast majority of users will be happy with this news, as it sounds like it will mostly return MoviePass to the product that it was right after the price drop. For the rest, the $5 discount might be enough to make it worth keeping the service and seeing a bunch of movies, it won't be as cheap as it was, but it will still be a lot cheaper than it could be.

That Time Mark Ruffalo Totally Spoiled Avengers: Endgame

MASSIVE spoiler ahead, don't read on if you haven't seen Avengers: Endgame!

After 21 movies and over a decade of movies, the time has finally come. Avengers: Endgame is officially in theaters, with the Russo Brothers bringing an end to the narrative that began back with 2007's Iron Man, and made major steps forward in Infinity War. All eyes are on how Phase Three will conclude, with both the hardcore fandom and casual moviegoers actively avoiding spoilers heading into opening weekend.

And if there's one guy that knows about spoilers, it's Mark Ruffalo. The 51 year-old actor shares the title of "worst secret keeper" with Tom Holland, as both Marvel heroes are known for spilling the beans prematurely. In fact, Ruffalo even spoiled the snap ahead of Infinity War, although we didn't realize until after the fact. Now that same turn of events has happened for Endgame, specifically related to Captain America's ending. When publicizing the movie, he said:

I didn’t even get a whole script of this movie. I don’t know why. The script I did get had dummy scenes in it. He gets married in this!

And just like that, Mark Ruffalo proves exactly why he can't be trusted with an Avengers script. Because while defending himself, he accidentally revealed a bit about Captain America's presumed ending in the MCU.

While promoting Avengers: Endgame to E! alongside co-stars Chris Evans and Karen Gillan, he totally blew part of Steve Rogers' ending in the massive blockbuster. Because despite Peggy Carter's death in Captain America: Civil War, he did manage to marry the love of his life. All it took was some misplaces Infinity Stones and Tony Stark's new time travel device.

After the good guys won the final (INSANE) battle against Thanos, the surviving heroes had to make sure they returned the Infinity Stones and Mjolnir back to their rightful timelines. This task goes to none other than Captain America himself, especially because he deemed himself worthy of wielding Thor's signature weapon. But there's just one problem: he doesn't return as expected. And after a few moments, it becomes clear why.

Cap ultimately got the happy ending he deserved, as he travelled back in time to live out his days with Peggy. The pair of heroes got to live the life they were robbed of when Steve Rogers sacrificed himself in The First Avenger, one of a few epic conclusions for the OG Avengers.

Mark Ruffalo did something similar ahead of Avengers: Infinity War, accidentally revealing yet another important plot twist. Although his mistake is arguably worse for that film, as he let slip about Thanos killing half of the characters. He also left his phone live streaming during the premiere of Thor: Ragnarok, so his track record is dismal no matter how you slice it.

In the world of horror movies, nothing is ever truly dead. The genre is one that is notorious for never ending properties and new sequels, and the always gory Saw franchise is no exception. After a few years in hibernation, the Saw movies returned this past October with Jigsaw. While a critical failure, Jigsaw made an impressive $102.9 million at the box office. Given that success, another sequel is likely on the way. But does the most recent addition to the franchise set up future stories? Directors The Spierig Brothers seem to think so, and recently teased that some seeds were planted during Jigsaw the sets up new stories. Peter Spierig said,

There's a lot of things that go on in Jigsaw that we talked about where they could go in further movies, and so there's things with the characters and ideas that have the foundations of other things that could potentially come in the next couple of movies.

Well, this certainly seems positive. It looks like The Spierig Brothers truly believe that they'll be more Saw movies in the future, and it seems they know exactly where they could go. Now we just have to wait and see if a new movies gets green lit, and if the Brothers sign on to help another one of John Kramer's adventures.

Peter Spierig's comments to Screen Rant are sure to excite all the hardcore Saw fans out there. Despite its horrifying violence and being the "torture porn" subcategory of horror, the franchise has always managed to maintain a solid fanbase. But that doesn't mean that the fans aren't privy to the various missteps of the Saw movies, especially the property's habit of retconning storylines into existence.

Indeed, the Saw franchise's overall plot isn't exactly what its known for. Because the movies are constantly killing off its stars in disgusting ways, there are always new protagonists. The franchise has tried to combat its confusion timeline by showing flashbacks and recaps during important narrative moments, but most movie audiences don't retain anything other than Jigsaw's terrifying traps.

Peter Spierig wants to change that, and he's got plenty of ideas on how. While speaking to the ending of Jigsaw, he said:

You want to make the movie itself a complete experience for the audience, a satisfying experience in terms of the story, of feeling like there is a conclusion. But at the same time, there are some questions about the characters and their arcs and things like that where we haven't explained. And we certainly talked about it with the producers and the writer and even the actors -- where things potentially could go. It really becomes a question of does the audience want more? Are they keen to see these characters -- the characters who survive and even sometimes the characters who don't survive can end up in another Saw film, based on its history. There's always room for flashbacks and who knows what.

But if Jigsaw already has hints to what future films will contain, then perhaps the future of the Saw franchise will be a bit more focused on a narrative throughline than its predecessors. Jigsaw's ending revealed that Matt Passmore's Logan Nelson was Jigsaw's OG protegee, retconning the newcomer before the other characters like Lawrence Gordon, Amanda, and Detective Hoffman. Perhaps the next film will explore how Logan fit into the previous films' contents, while also showing the new terrifying game that he'll put new victims into.

Unfortunately, we'll just have to see what follow if and when a new Saw movie is eventually greenlit. Jigsaw is currently available on demand and for home purchase. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
