When Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 May Finally Begin Filming
Although Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was one of the first movies to be announced for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 4 (or whatever the next upcoming slate of movies is being called), the firing and eventual re-hiring of writer and director James Gunn complicated its release schedule. We won’t be seeing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as soon as was previously believed, but word’s come in that it could begin filming as soon as next year.
Back in March, it had been rumored that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 wouldn’t start rolling cameras until early 2021, but THR is saying that production is actually set to begin sometime in 2020. It’s possible that the launch date is for late in 2020, thus being only a few months separated from the previously rumored date, but for Guardians of the Galaxy fans, the prospect of the team’s threequel coming sooner than previously expected is undoubtedly welcome.
When Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was first unveiled, it was generally believed that it would be ready to go by summer 2020. Marvel never officially confirmed this, but after Disney fired James Gunn last July, any release date plans that might have been penciled in were erased, and the project was put on indefinite hiatus.
In between when James Gunn was fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and then re-hired in March, he boarded the DC Extended Universe to write and direct The Suicide Squad, and that’s still in play. Production on that sequel/relaunch is set to begin in September, and because it’s not coming out until August 2021, it’s possible Gunn could find himself in a situation where he’s directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and still working on The Suicide Squad on the side.

In any case, assuming that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 does end up beginning production in 2020, there’s a slim chance it could be ready to go by November 5, 2021, which is one of the dates that Marvel has blocked off. However, given all the VFX work that goes into making these movies, I suspect that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 won’t arrive until 2022, presumably taking the May 6 date, as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 also opened in May.

While no official plot details have been revealed for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 have been revealed yet, the currently-playing Avengers: Endgame did hint at what might be coming up by showing Thor accompanying the Guardians back into space and Star-Lord looking for the past version of Gamora, who is now running around the present day MCU. Let’s also not forget that one of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’s mid-credit scenes set the stage for Adam Warlock to eventually be brought into this universe.

Natalie Portman Had A Tough Time Dealing With The The Star Wars Prequel Trilogy Backlash
Star Wars is one of the biggest franchises in film history, and is still a behemoth at the box office after so many years in theaters. The galaxy far, far away has enthralled generations of moviegoers, which form its absolutely massive fanbase. But because so much stock is put into George Lucas' space opera, the wrath of the fans can be intense.
Just ask Natalie Portman, who starred as Padme Amidala in the prequel trilogy. George Lucas' second run in the Star Wars franchise has been the subject of some criticism, who took umbrage with excessive green screens, as well as the script and some performances. Portman recently opened up about the backlash to the films, especially as it they were being shot and released.
It was hard. It was a bummer because it felt like people were so excited about new ones and then to have people feel disappointed. Also to be at an age that I didn’t really understand that’s kind of the nature of the beast. When something has that much anticipation it can almost only disappoint.
Natalie Portman was still a teenager when Star Wars: The Phantom Menace arrived in theaters in 1999. It was definitely a breakthrough role for the young actress, but she was also privy to the backlash of the fans. People just don't know how to treat Naboo royalty.
The prequel trilogy has become more widely accepted in the years following its conclusion, but things started off very rocky. The Phantom Menace was noticeably more kid friendly, and the addition of the clownish Jar Jar Binks didn't resonate well with the adult audience. And considering it was this demographic that made the original trio of films so massive, that approval was key.

The prequels seemed to improve as they went on, but there are some cringeworthy and often meme-d moments that consider to plague it. But with Disney continuing the franchise and producing subversive projects like The Last Jedi, the prequel has been getting more attention and love-- especially as the time before A New Hope is explored with standalone films.
In her same conversation with Empire, Natalie Portman addressed the love the prequels have gotten in more recent years, saying:
With the perspective of time, it’s been re-evaluated by a lot of people who actually really love them now. There’s a very avid group of people who think they’re the best ones now! I don’t have enough perspective to weigh in.
Natalie Portman may have played Padme through three movies, but she's always made it clear that she doesn't really follow up on the latest Star Wars news. She did manage to visit the set of The Last Jedi with her sons, so there are still some perks to being Queen.
It should be interesting to see how the prequel trilogy ends up factoring into future Star Wars projects. J.J. Arbams' The Rise of Skywalker will end the current trilogy and Skywalker Saga forever, and there are a few mysterious projects brewing at Lucasfilm. Will Rian Johnson's trilogy or D.B. Weiss and David Benioff's developing movies transport us back? We'll have to see.

John Carpenter And Jason Blum Dont Think The Current Horror Boom Is Going To Last Long
In case you haven't heard, we are in the midst of a horror boom. We've not only seen a surprising number of legitimately great scary movies in the last year, but audiences are also eating them up and generating shocking box office numbers. It's a very exciting time to be a fan of the genre -- but according to Blumhouse founder Jason Blum and the legendary John Carpenter, folks should really enjoy it while it lasts. Says Blum,
My feeling about horror being a big deal right now is that it's very cyclical. It's a big deal, so now everyone's going to make horror movies. There are going to be a lot of crap ones, and then everyone's going to say, 'Horror's not working anymore!' And then there's going to be much, much less horror. Then there's going to be a great one because there haven't been that many, and they're not going to get made unless they're really good, and then there's the boom.
Jason Blum has spent the last decade becoming one of the biggest names in horror, and he's seen the genre go through some massive changes in that time. As such, when he looks at the current "renaissance" -- which he very much helped kick-start by backing Jordan Peele's Get Out -- he doesn't really see a lasting trend, but instead a series of ebbs and flows.
The producer spoke about the current state of horror last month during the Los Angeles press day for David Gordon Green's Halloween, where he was paired with John Carpenter for roundtable interviews. Preceding his statement, he noted his curiosity about Carpenter's thoughts on the matter as well, and the genius director bluntly agreed:
You've got the secret. You haven't forgotten about Japanese horror, have you? Way back then - you haven't forgotten. That was a big deal! It went away. And [Jason Blum is] partially responsible for bringing in the new horror stuff.
Of course, John Carpenter is referring to the period in the early 2000s when Hollywood fell in love with creating English-language remakes of Japanese titles like Ringu (The Ring) and Ju-On (The Grudge). Fitting in with the conversation, that fad eventually died thanks to oversaturation, and then a few years later the exact same thing happened with the found-footage craze -- which was initially jump-started by the Jason Blum-produced Paranormal Activity.
During the interview, Jason Blum noted that specific experience, and even went as far as to map out a rough timeline of how the whole system operates:
Since I started it's dipped and come down. Paranormal Activity took off, and then it dipped around about five or you know, whatever, I don't know, four or five. It dipped, and then now it's ramping back up again. And I guarantee you in 12 months there'll be so many bad horror movies people will be like, 'I'm never going to see another horror movie again.' Because now it's like, 'Oh, we can make money if we make a horror movie!' And then they're bad... That's the market. That's how Hollywood works.
Jason Blum and John Carpenter's comments aside, it is worth noting that there is something somewhat special about the current horror boom in that it can't be readily defined. In the past couple years we've seen titles like the aforementioned Get Out, Andres Muschietti's IT, and John Krasinski's A Quiet Place become phenomenal successes, but there really isn't anything that ties the titles together beyond genre categorization. One has to wonder if there's a possibility that the variety involved might sustain things for a little longer -- but we'll just have to wait and see.
For now, the current horror boom is operating at full strength, and should provide a perfect cinematic atmosphere for the arrival of David Gordon Green's Halloween, which is in theaters this Friday.

Zack Snyder's Response To Fans Wanting A Justice League Snyder Cut
When it was announced that Zack Snyder would be holding a three-day event screening his director's cuts, and holding Q&A sessions, you knew it was coming. Someone was going to ask about The Snyder Cut for Justice League. In this case, they shouted about it, and Snyder didn't have much of a response -- other than to nod and drop a line about "subversion." Audience member: You probably have the most director's cuts out of most Hollywood directors, so congratulations on that, because that's...
Zack Snyder: I don't know if that's a good thing or not.
Audience member: No, well you definitely fight for your visions, and that's definitely inspiring to the artists that want to get out there, so, you know, hopefully that tradition continues on in the future.
Zack Snyder: I hope so, too. [turns to Debbie Snyder] Is that right? Is it right to hope for that? I guess...
Another audience member: Release the Snyder Cut!

Zack Snyder: [nods in acknowledgment] I see. Subversion. It's fine.
Some fans thought they heard him say "some version" instead of subversion, thinking he meant to release some version of Justice League. But it sounds like he was making a joke about fans being subversive, to undermine the authority of Warner Bros. and push for his director's cut on Justice League.

The "I hope so too" -- and the way he said it -- to me, that said the most. I'm kind of surprised he didn't take that moment to thank the passionate fans for pushing for his vision of Justice League. They are the ones that still tweet #ReleaseTheSnyderCut. The Justice League cast would like to see Snyder's intended director's cut too; Jason Momoa said he was obsessed with the Snyder Cut and wanted to see it.
Zack Snyder ended up stepping away (or was forced away) as the director of Justice League due to a personal family tragedy. Joss Whedon took over for reshoots, and a lot changed from what Snyder had envisioned for the film -- and pretty much negated what he had planned to do next. The resulting Justice League film made a decent amount of money ($657,924,295 worldwide) but it didn't really make anyone happy.
Recently, one of Zack Snyder's longtime collaborators, photographer Clay Enos, said what happened with Justice League would "go down in film history as some sort of terrible wrong that can be righted, creatively." He said we need a cultural shift that prioritizes auteur filmmaking from director's with a specific vision.
It does seem like Warner Bros./DC may have learned some lessons after the frustrations of Justice League. They found a hit with James Wan's $1 billion Aquaman and look to have a crowd-pleaser with Shazam! Word is, Warner Bros. is shying away from the shared universe to focus more on individual stories and director's visions. So some good seems to be coming out of the whole mess.
Turns Out Justin Timberlake Was Considered For Rocketman's Elton John
This weekend’s Rocketman stars Taron Egerton as music legend Elton John in the musical fantasy film from director Dexter Fletcher. Egerton has already drawn rave reviews for his performance and how he completely becomes Elton John, right down to doing all the singing in the film. It sounds like it was a role Egerton was born to play and it would be hard to imagine anyone else in it. However, Taron Egerton wasn’t the only actor who could have played the flamboyant superstar.
It turns out that Justin Timberlake was once considered for Rocketman’s Elton John; the reason being that he already portrayed Elton John in the music video for Elton John’s 2001 song “This Train Don’t Stop There Anymore.” That performance is why JT was among the names Elton John was looking at to play him in the film, but as Elton John’s husband and Rocketman producer David Furnish explained, the idea never got far:
But we never formerly approached Justin because we weren't ever at a stage where it was the right time to approach him. But he did an amazing job in the video. He put on a prosthetic nose, and it turned out to have been some really interesting acting work as well.
The video for “This Train Don’t Stop There Anymore” stars Justin Timberlake as Elton John at the height of his popularity in the 1970s and shows Elton John going through hair and makeup, making his ways through throngs of adoring fans and going to a lavish party. The former NSYNC singer wears a prosthetic nose in the video and looks nothing like the JT we are used to seeing.
Justin Timberlake’s appearance in that video is what inspired Elton John to consider him as a candidate to play him in Rocketman. The video was an inadvertent proof of concept for the casting and good enough that David Furnish and Elton John thought Justin Timberlake could portray Elton in a full feature. But as David Furnish told The Hollywood Reporter, despite thinking of him for the Rocketman role, they never actually approached Justin Timberlake about it.
So although Justin Timberlake was the first name on Elton John’s list to play him, JT was never offered the role in Rocketman. The reason for that seems to be that when the idea came up, it wasn’t the right time to reach out to Justin Timberlake. It’s not entirely clear what that means, but it sounds like the development of the film simply wasn’t far enough along where it would make sense to start any sort of casting.
Still, it provides another fascinatingly curious casting ‘what-if?’ much like what would Bohemian Rhapsody have looked like with Sacha Baron Cohen and not Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury. This music video and the obvious fact that Justin Timberlake has the requisite singing chops made him an obvious candidate to play Elton John in Rocketman, but he wasn’t the only name considered. Taron Egerton was offered the role only after actor Tom Hardy, who was first attached, dropped out.
Despite these interesting bits of ‘what-if?’ casting, it seems that the right person got the role. The reactions to Rocketman are hugely positive with a large amount of the praise going to Taron Egerton’s performance, where he proves you don’t have to be a former boybander to know how to sing.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi's Honest Trailer Pokes Fun At The Polarizing Fan Reactions
There is arguably no franchise with as passionate a fanbase as Star Wars, and there has been no film in recent memory to prove as divisive as Star Wars: The Last Jedi was among the saga's most ardent supporters. Countless fans, all boasting their credentials and wearing their fandom like a rebel patch on their sleeve, exalted Rian Johnson's film as the best film since Empire or denounced it as a sin far greater than even Jar Jar Binks. It is this hyper-polarization that is highlighted in the Honest Trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Check it out below:
What I like about this Honest Trailer is that it pokes fun at the movie itself, while primarily focusing on the biggest story to come out of it: the divided fan reaction. The two dueling fan perspectives is hilarious and really highlights how all the people raging against each other on social media and in comments sections are actually part of the same small portion of the population that is dedicated to the franchise in this way. But naturally, as with anything people are passionate about, opinions are hard to change, and there is little room for nuance or understanding. As the Honest Trailer says, "The only way to talk about Star Wars now is in absolutes."
The Honest Trailer also touches on some of the things that even defenders of the film took issue with, like the Canto Bight events. The commentator talking about the Canto Bight sequence making him miss podracing is hilarious. And I will say the podracing sequence in The Phantom Menace was way more exciting than the fathier escape. The bitter fanboy voice saying that 'Star Wars is not a joke' and 'Rian Johnson ruined my childhood' is on point and shines a mirror on how ridiculous some of the hatred for the film has gotten.
Another of the criticisms of the film has been the hyperspace move by Admiral Holdo that essentially breaks some of the internal logic of the film. But as this trailer points out, there are no laws of space battle. The sound in the battles alone have long since disqualified this franchise from winning any Neil deGrasse Tyson awards for scientific accuracy. This trailer also acknowledges The Last Jedi's complete disregard for the questions raised in The Force Awakens and the disappointing nature of the answers offered. But even in a film as divisive as this one, we can all agree on the mind-boggling awesomeness of that throne room scene.
Brilliantly, the trailer ends with a dig at Solo: A Star Wars Story, a film whose storied production troubles will inevitably lead to a savage Honest Trailer in the future. Star Wars: The Last Jedi is out on Blu-ray today. Solo: A Star Wars Story arrives in theaters on May 25.
