I Am Actually Scared To See Jordan Peele's Us
Lupita Nyong'o in US

Jordan Peele surprised a lot of people with his directorial debut, Get Out. I was one of those people. While I had been a fan of Peele's comedy for a long time, I had no idea what to expect when I sat down to watch his first horror movie. Looking back, it's still the best movie I've seen since February 2017, when it was released. When it was announced that Peele was working on his next project, a movie simply called Us, I was certainly excited. Now here I stand on the eve of being able to finally watch Peele's new movie and I'm confronting a serious problem.

I'm actually a little scared to see this movie.

I still remember the first time i saw the trailer for Us. It was just before Christmas last year. We knew the trailer was imminent; in fact, it was expected to be released online on Christmas Day, so when I went to the theater to do a little end-of-the-year awards season maintenance and watch The Favourite, I certainly wasn't expecting to see that trailer, not yet and not ahead of that movie, but there it was. Jordan Peele's name came up before anything started to get weird in the trailer, so I knew what I was watching, and as I sat in a mostly empty theater I watched one of the scariest trailers I have ever seen unfold over two minutes. Then The Favourite started and I'd be lying if i said I gave the film the proper attention, at least at the start. The trailer was still on my mind.

If you somehow have made it this far without seeing the first look at Us, here's a reminder of what I'm talking about.

I haven't seen anything scarier than that trailer since. In fact, I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. I have simultaneously been looking forward to Us, possibly more than any other movie this year, while also being terrified to actually see it.

Horror movies are a strange sort of animal. It's the one genre of film that you sometimes hear movie fans seemingly discounting in its entirety. If you hear somebody claim they love movies, but don't watch dramas, you'd wonder what the hell was wrong with them; however, if somebody says that about horror movies, we just move on like it's expected and even makes sense.

Frequently, movies that should be classified as horror get called something else, if only to avoid the stigma that can come along with the genre title. Get Out itself was one of these movies. It didn't have a murderous slasher antagonist or a series of brutal murders of or by teenagers, so by certain definitions, maybe it didn't qualify as a horror movie. It was a horror movie, of course, but if calling it a "thriller" helped Get Out do better at the box office, so be it.

Of course, all that was part of why Get Out worked so well. Because it was absolutely a horror movie, but one that didn't necessarily look that way at first. The film found its horrific elements in other places beyond simply violence. We didn't get the visual horror that we expect from a traditional "slasher movie." However, the scenario was pure nightmare fuel even if the villains didn't wear hockey masks.

And that's part of why Us is feeling so scary to me now now. Based on the early responses by those that saw Us at SXSW, it's clear the movie has more to say than the trailers are letting on, in much the same way that Get Out did, yet in addition to that, the movie also has those elements of "traditional horror" that make this one feel like it's going to be bloody and violent.

I've seen more than my share of horror movies in recent years, it's sort of my job now, but when I was a kid I was certainly one of those people who "didn't do horror." It wasn't so much that I avoided the genre, I simply didn't seek it out. The idea of being uncomfortable while watching a movie just didn't appeal to me -- it wasn't what I went to the movies for. When I did see them, horror movies didn't necessarily scare me, but they always made me nervous that they might.

Horror movies still make me nervous and uncomfortable to some extent now. I mean, they're supposed to, but never has it been like this. I didn't feel like this when I went to see IT, another movie that was actually one of my favorites in 2017. I'm just as excited to see that sequel later this year, without any of the stomach-churning dread that comes with Us.

Also, it should be noted, that "jump scares" get me all the time. Every. Single. Time. Even a movie I've seen before has about a 40% chance of making me spill something with a jump scare. When I'm seeing a movie for the first time, popcorn flying into the aisle is virtually guaranteed.

Everything about the Us trailer makes me uncomfortable in a way that I haven't felt in a really long time. The dark versions of the main characters feel not simply evil, but wrong. The way they look, the way they move, it all feels off. These are scariest movie monsters I've ever encountered, and I've only made it as far as the trailer.

Of course, what might make Us so potentially terrifying is that I'm also so incredibly excited to see it. I'm throwing myself to the wolves with this one in a way that I haven't with any other recent horror movie. It makes me feel vulnerable in a way that I don't usually let myself get with any movie. Even if it wasn't my job to see Us, I would be seeing the new movie from the man that brought us Get Out this weekend.

I have no idea what's in store for me when I see Us this week, although I'm prepared to be terrified on multiple levels. I may have to skip out on bringing snacks due to the aforementioned fear of throwing them all over the aisles. I can't wait.

How Much Money Us Is Expected To Make During Its Opening Weekend

How Much Money Us Is Expected To Make During Its Opening Weekend
Lupita Nyong'o In Us

It looks like the shapeshifters will hand the baton off to the doppelgängers at the box office this weekend, as the MCU’s smash hit Captain Marvel makes way for Jordan Peele’s horror film, Us. Jordan Peele’s debut film Get Out wound up becoming wildly profitable, earning over $250 million on a $4.5 million budget. And although it is far too early to tell if Us will enjoy similar success, it does look like it will get off to a strong start opening weekend.

The horror movie from Universal and Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw productions is tracking to open in a wide range from $38 million to $48 million according to The Hollywood Reporter. There is even a belief among some box office analysts that Us could reach or crack the $50 million mark this weekend.

Based on this tracking, things are looking good that Us will come in first at the box office, beating out Captain Marvel in its third weekend in release. Even at the low end, a $38 million opening bow would improve on Get Out’s $33.4 million domestic debut in 2017. Us cost more than Get Out though at $20 million, but it still looks poised for box office success.

These predictions are up from the earlier tracking that had the film landing between $35 million and $40 million. Those numbers came in before the Us' buzzy premiere at the South By Southwest Film Festival and before the positive reviews started coming out. Now it's the week of the release and the buzz has increased and the opening weekend box office tracking seems to reflect that.

Other than Captain Marvel, which has been in theaters for a couple of weeks now, Us will not have any major competition this weekend; no other studio putting out a wide release opposite the follow-up to Jordan Peele’s box office hit, Get Out.

If Us manages to go as high as $50 million this weekend, it will be a feat similar to what A Quiet Place managed last year. John Krasinski’s film too had a buzzy SXSW premiere and opened in early April to $50 million. Like A Quiet Place and Get Out, Us will also likely benefit from positive word of mouth.

The reviews are in for the film and they are very positive, indicating that Jordan Peele has once again delivered. Only this time, it is a true horror film, yet one that still give you plenty to think about once you leave the theater. As the kind of film that is likely to inspire discussion, it may drive people to the theater to participate and perhaps even have repeat viewings, as star Winston Duke has recommended.

Us opens on March 22. Check out our 2019 Release Schedule to see all the other movies you should have your eyes on this year.

Men In Black Box Office: International Gets The Number One Spot, But Still Disappoints

Men In Black Box Office: International Gets The Number One Spot, But Still Disappoints

Folks, the domestic box office is in a rut. In preparing to write up the latest numbers, I looked back on headlines from the last couple weeks, and rediscovered the used phrases "tepid opening" and "slow weekend" to the way things had gone. Sadly that's a trend that we are seeing continue as we slide past mid-June. This weekend saw the return of two well-known franchises hit the big screen, but on the whole nobody really cared about them, as both F. Gary Gray's Men In Black International and Tim Story's Shaft failed to inspire a lot of ticket sales.

Check out the results in the full Top 10 rundown below, and join me after for analysis!

For what it's worth, the foreign numbers for Men In Black International should keep the brand a viable property for Sony Pictures going into the future - as the release has already surpassed $100 million globally - but things definitely did not go well for the movie here in North America. The trouble started mid-week with a modest-sized wave of negative buzz, as critics at large were left feeling underwhelmed by what the blockbuster had to offer. This lowered expectations to the point where prognosticators were estimating at least a $30 million three day start for the film, but as you can see above, it wasn't even able to get over that bar (and keep in mind that there were once suggestions of a possible $50 million opening).

This is most definitely a bad start in the age of the $350 million opening, but what truly makes the performance look bad is when the figures are compared to the numbers generated by previous titles in the sequence. From 1997 to 2012, Men In Black as a brand could be relied on bringing in at least $50 million in its first Friday-to-Sunday - and this latest chapter barely eclipsed half of that. And certainly not helping anything is the fact that it's received a rather tepid audience response - as represented by the "B" that it received from CinemaScore. So don't expect this to be a release that gets a late swell of support because of folks telling all of their friends how good it is.

So what went wrong? Well, most critics seem to agree that it has nothing to do with stars Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth - who reunite after Taika Waititi's effortlessly delightful Thor: Ragnarok - but instead the fact that they are given nothing to do by the film's script. Should there be future sequels, this is fortunately something that can be remedied with talented individuals taking proper care and attention when it comes to the story being told, but Sony might now also feel a bit gun shy about greenlighting any future chapters in this continuity.

What about Shaft? To turn a phrase, people didn't dig it.

Clearly the latest film in the legendary blaxploitation franchise didn't cost nearly as much as Men In Black International, but even still there can't be anybody at Warner Bros. who is smiling because of these results. Opening under $10 million is bad; opening in sixth place is worse; and earning a mere fraction of the opening weekend numbers for John Singleton's 2000 sequel ($21.7 million) is pure insult to injury. The critical responses doesn't even earn it a modest cherry on top either, as multiple write-ups have included words like "homophobic" and "misogynistic." All of that together, along with the number of anticipated releases set to come out in the next few weeks, should guarantee that Shaft's stay in the Top 10 won't be long - even with the reported support of audiences that has manifested in contrast to professional critics.

Of course, it wasn't exactly a banner weekend for everything else out in circulation either. Illumination Entertainment's The Secret Life Of Pets 2 had a solid 49% drop from week one to week two, but its domestic gross is still about $10 million less than what its predecessor was able to bring in during its first three days. And as I mentioned in my box office report last Sunday, the audience for it is likely going to totally disappear next weekend when Pixar's Toy Story 4 lands in theaters nationwide. The drop won't be massive, but the numbers are definitely going to sink.

At the very least one can say that the animated dogs and cats movie did a hell of a lot better than Simon Kinberg's Dark Phoenix. It was a rough state of affairs last time around when the latest/last chapter of the X-Men series earned the "Weakest Opening In The Franchise" title, and things now aren't exactly better. The news cycle made note of the fact that both Brightburn and Godzilla: King Of The Monsters recently experienced massive drops in their second weekends (68.7 percent, and 67.7 percent, respectively), but the Marvel comics movie actually managed to outpace both of them in that regard. The $9 million earned from Friday to Sunday means that the blockbuster's numbers sank 72.6 percent, and that's significant. At this rate, making $100 million domestically will likely be impossible, and that will make it easily the worst performing chapter in the history of the big screen brand.

How will things turn around for Hollywood? Well, Disney seems to have the magic touch so far in 2019 (note that Guy Ritchie's Aladdin may soon be nearing $300 million domestically), and as mentioned above, the studio has another hotly anticipated title arriving in just a few days. Lee Unkrich's Toy Story 3 was a crazy big hit when it came out in 2010, making $110 million in its first weekend, and it wouldn't surprise many to see its follow-up perform similarly. Throw in some interesting question marks like Lars Klevberg's Child's Play reboot, Luc Besson's new action flick Anna, and Tom Harper's musical drama Wild Rose and you have all the ingredients for some interesting Top 10 shake-ups.

Be sure to come back next Sunday to see how everything plays out.

Why Thousands Of Captain Marvel Reviews Were Purged From Rotten Tomatoes Over The Weekend

Why Thousands Of Captain Marvel Reviews Were Purged From Rotten Tomatoes Over The Weekend
Carol Danvers looking pissed in Captain Marvel

Carol Danvers finally made her MCU debut in theaters this weekend in Captain Marvel, and while it was a smooth and uninterrupted flight at the box office, there was plenty of turbulence on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. Early in the day on Friday, the latest MCU movie had a dismal audience score of 33% on the site from over 58,000 reviews. That afternoon though, the number of audience reviews dropped drastically to 7,000, good for a 35% score.

So why did Rotten Tomatoes purge over 50,000 Captain Marvel reviews from its system? The reason is mostly due to a glitch related to some changes the site recently made, as Rotten Tomatoes explained in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter:

We have identified a bug in the post-release functionality for the movies that have released into theaters since our product update last week. The quantity of user ratings (which is displayed directly below the audience score and is intended to only include the quantity of users who have left a rating or written review after a movie’s release) had included both pre-release and post-release fan voting.

Basically, the 58,000+ user reviews that showed up on the morning of Captain Marvel’s release included both new reviews, presumably from audiences who went to Thursday night preview screenings, as well as reviews that were submitted prior to the movie’s release. Therefore, the reviews were purged so as to only show reviews that could have been submitted by people who had actually seen the movie, versus those who submitted reviews when they couldn’t possibly have seen it yet.

This comes after the recent product update Rotten Tomatoes implemented that made it so that audiences couldn’t review a movie before it was released. As updates often do, it came with a bug that allowed those older reviews to still initially show up for Captain Marvel. Rotten Tomatoes made other changes to pre-release movies on the site as well, changing the ‘want to see’ metric from a percentage to simply a running count.

Rotten Tomatoes also made it so that people can’t comment on a movie before it hits theaters. The company explained that decision, saying:

We are disabling the comment function prior to a movie’s release date. Unfortunately, we have seen an uptick in non-constructive input, sometimes bordering on trolling, which we believe is a disservice to our general readership. We have decided that turning off this feature, for now, is the best course of action. Don’t worry though, fans will still get to have their say: Once a movie is released, audiences can leave a user rating and comments as they always have.

Non-constructive input? On the internet!? In an effort to combat the non-constructive input, people can’t comment on a movie until they could have actually seen it. The only thing they can do now before a movie is released is to say whether they want to see it or not. After the movie is released though, people are free to give their rating and comment as they always have been to have their voices heard.

And calling it ‘bordering on trolling’ is quite a diplomatic way of addressing what has been going on on the review aggregator. Rotten Tomatoes says that the changes were not made for Captain Marvel specifically, but they have come in the wake of a concerted troll effort to tank the film’s scores.

The campaign against Captain Marvel came in response to some comments from the film’s star Brie Larson about inclusion and diversity in the film press, comments which certainly could have been phrased better and ones she later clarified.

Whether Rotten Tomatoes purging of thousands of audience scores, and the retooling of its model that changes what input audiences can give and when, will make a difference is debatable. Despite being purged down to 7,000 on Friday, Captain Marvel’s audience scores are now back up to a count of over 54,000 with a rating of 58%. That’s more than the number of audience scores for Avengers: Infinity War. Something tells me those scores may not all be legit and submitted in good faith. Especially considering the film has an "A" CinemaScore. Rotten Tomatoes is fighting a losing battle.

It doesn’t matter though because Captain Marvel still absolutely crushed at the box office in its opening weekend, breaking records and flying higher, further, faster to instant success. It’s almost as if all this trolling had absolutely no effect at all and convinced no one they shouldn’t see the movie. Although not everyone loved it and there are legitimate criticisms to be made.

See what we thought of Captain Marvel, and if you haven't checked it out yet, be sure to find out what ticket you should buy when you do. To see all the big movies coming this year that can look forward to their own Rotten Tomatoes drama, take a look at our 2019 release schedule.

Yes, J.J. Abrams Consulted George Lucas Over The Rise Of Skywalker

Yes, J.J. Abrams Consulted George Lucas Over The Rise Of Skywalker
The Group in The Rise of Skywalker

The Star Wars franchise has been expanding impressively over the last few years, thanks to Disney's acquisition of Lucasfim. It all started with J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which introduced a new class of characters to interact with franchise favorites like Luke, Leia, and Han. Since then, the galaxy has continued to grow through standalone films and the upcoming Mandalorian live-action TV series. But all eyes are on the main franchise, especially since Episode IX will end the Skywalker Saga forever.

J.J Abrams is back in the director's chair for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and there's a ton of pressure to deliver. In addition to wrapping up the current trilogy, the upcoming blockbuster must also end the narrative George Lucas began back in A New Hope. But the generations of fans should rest easy, because Abrams consulted with Lucas early in the process. As he recently revealed:

There have been a lot of ideas since the beginning, since George first came up with this, of where things could go. We had a meeting with him before we even wrote the script about this. So a lot of what we have taken, is really taken to heart, everything that's come before. While it's been obviously significantly challenging, it's been a greater opportunity than a challenge. I cannot wait for you to see what this movie is.

Well, this is exciting. Because although George Lucas isn't intimately involved in the current trilogy of Star Wars movies, it appears he did have some input regarding The Rise of Skywalker. So perhaps we'll all get the ending the beloved space opera deserves.

J.J. Abrams' comments to MTV News are sure to excite Star Wars fans, especially the OG moviegoers who saw Episodes IV-VI in theaters in the 70s and 80s. While the prequel series left something to be desired, Star Wars is only possible through George Lucas' vision and ambition. The last few movies may not have been what Lucas planned for the sequel trilogy, but at least he was consulted ahead of the franchise's big finale.

From the first The Rise of Skywalker trailer, it does look like J.J. Abrams is taking a more traditional approach to the sequel. While Rian Johnson subverted fan expectations in The Last Jedi, Abrams will have to provide a satisfying conclusion, and wrap up a ton of narrative threads. That includes taking the group of characters on an adventure together, rather than keeping their plots separate.

As a reminder, you can check out the first trailer for The Rise of Skywalker below.

The gang's all there, including Carrie Fisher's Leia, courtesy of unused footage from the last two movies. The movie's trailer and title were released last week at Star Wars Celebration, and set the internet aflame. While anticipation was already high, Palpatine's laugh in The Rise of Skywalker's trailer proved that J.J. Abrams could potentially go anywhere for Episode IX.

More information should come as the movie draws closer. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is set to arrive on December 20th. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Den Of Thieves 2 Is Happening, Heres What We Know

Den Of Thieves 2 Is Happening, Heres What We Know

January often finds itself referred to as a dead period at the movies, but January 2018 managed to produce some surprisingly fun and profitable cinematic offerings. One of the most notable of the bunch was Christian Gudegast's Den of Thieves, which surpassed expectations at the box office and has thus far grossed roughly $57 million worldwide. Now it seems that the folks involved in the movie are keen on capitalizing on that success, as Den of Thieves 2 is currently in development with several key players returning for the next outing.

That's right. Den of Thieves is getting a sequel, and it looks like it's going to bring Gerard Butler back to headline the affair as Nick O'Brien, and O'Shea Jackson Jr. will join him as Donnie. Director Christian Gudegast is also returning behind the camera, which means audiences can likely expect a similar style and flavor to the story. That said, things won't be too identical this time, as the sequel is trading in the mean streets of southern California for Europe, as Nick (aware of Donnie's criminal genius status) chases after the young con artist. Meanwhile, the two find themselves embroiled in a massive diamond heist and a conflict with the Panther mafia.

We're about to get into some spoilers ahead for Den of Thieves! Knowing what happens in the original Den of Thieves, it does make a certain degree of sense to see that a sequel has entered development. The film (very much an ode to classic crime thrillers) ends with a Usual Suspects-esque conclusion in which Gerard Butler's Nick O'Brien puts together the pieces of the mystery and realizes that Donnie Wilson (O'Shea Jackson Jr.) was actually the mastermind behind the entire Federal Reserve heist. Now, we see where he goes with that information.

Then there's also the matter of the narrative loose ends left by the first movie, particularly as they relate to Nick O'Brien's personal life. One major subplot of the film involves watching Nick's family and home life fall apart as he descends further and further into the Merrimen case. This storyline never really ties into the final scenes of the film when we learn about Donnie's true nature or Nick's realization of what happened, so Den of Thieves 2 l could help pay off moments from the first installment that arguably need more attention.

One thing not mentioned by Deadline's report of the Den of Thieves sequel is whether or not we will see any members of the Merrimen gang return. Although Merrimen (Pablo Schreiber), Enson Levoux (50 Cent), and Bosco (Evan Jones) all die in the climactic shootout of the first film, Den of Thieves used quite a bit of flashback and non-linear storytelling. If the sequel continues that and fleshes out the events of the first movie, then it's entirely possible that we could see some cameos when it debuts. We'll just have to wait and see.
